Days on the Lawn 2022

When the 2020 Days on the Lawn were cancelled, we had no idea it would be two years before we could host our admitted student open houses again. To say we are excited to start the 2022 DOTL season next week would be quite an understatement! We're ecstatic!

Here are a few notes for those of you who are traveling to Charlottesville next month for Days on the Lawn:

1. The Schedule

There are all sorts of talks and sessions on the DOTL schedule, but the pace of your day is totally up to you. Some students have a "divide and conquer" approach, sending a parent to one session while they go to a different one. Others take a more leisurely approach. This is a day to get the information you need to make a decision about attending UVA and if that includes meandering around the gardens or hanging out on a patio for a while, that's just fine.

2. Parking

We sent detailed information about parking and registration by email. Please read that information carefully and share it with the person coming with you. Visiting on a Days on the Lawn day is not the same as on other days. If you're driving, you'll be parking and checking in at John Paul Jones Arena and taking a shuttle to Central Grounds. If walking, you'll be checking in at the Rotunda. Keep in mind that you'll be arriving when many locals are commuting, so please leave some extra time for traffic.

3. Dress Comfortably

You will probably be doing a lot of walking on your DOTL day, so wear comfortable shoes. It will most likely be cold in the mornings and warm up over the course of the day, so be prepared by dressing layers.

4. Don't Miss the Student Social

There is a students-only social in Garden 9 (it's marked on the map we'll give you at check-in) at 1 PM each DOTL day. There will be snacks, games, and some current students there to chat. I usually try to stop by with Jack for a bit, too. Just a heads up that Jack believes he is an excellent corn hole partner.

5. About Dorms

You can walk around the housing area, but we aren't able to have dorm tours this year. Luckily, there are video tours showing the different types of residence halls on the UVA Housing youtube channel. Housing will have a tent set up to field your questions at DOTL.

There are also some tours on the WUVA youtube channel (that's a great channel to get a sense of student life here, by the way).

The number of current students, staff, and faculty who have signed up to take part in DOTL is probably over 100 right now and everyone else at UVA realizes what day it is pretty quickly. If you need help or have questions, the student volunteers will be in a special t-shirt (orange for most, blue for the team leaders) and admission staff members will have nametags on.

If you need anything from our team, you can email adm-days@virginia.edu in advance of your DOTL day. During DOTL, you'll probably see an admission officer at most sessions, but we will always have people at Peabody to help visitors.

Safe travels! We can't wait to see you!

Miss a Virtual Days on the Lawn Event? Recordings Available Now!

I've gotten so man questions from students who weren't able to join some of the live virtual Days on the Lawn sessions in the last few weeks, but are looking for recordings. All of the recorded sessions are available on the Virtual DOTL website!

As a reminder, enrollment deposits are due by Saturday, May 1st. If there is anything we can do to help as you decide where you'll be starting your college career, please reach out to us via whatever channel is most comfortable. We have a dean on call each weekday during business hours, student volunteers who are eager to chat, and I'll also be monitoring my inboxes on the various social media platforms.

Virtual #UVA Days on the Lawn Starts SATURDAY!

All throughout April, we will have virtual events geared towards our admitted students. Admitted students got an email about this already, but I thought I'd link to the Virtual DOTL website in case it's been missed. The calendar link on that site will take you to a page where you can register for as many events as you'd like. The kick-off event is tomorrow, Saturday, April 3rd at noon. There will be a special guest at that session! Afterwards, there is a live tour and a student chat.

I'll be posting a weekly reminder of the week's programming here on the blog and on my instagram account. There are sessions for every school/college and topics like housing, career services, research, and study abroad.

I especially want to highlight our Virginia Ambassadors' chat sessions. The Ambassadors went live on the UVA Admission youtube channel every week for the last few months to talk about their UVA experience and answer questions and the sessions are available to watch there. Check out future student chat opportunities here.

All #UVA Admission Events Cancelled

At UVA, we've been getting messages about COVID-19 since January (we didn't even know that term back then). The University assembled a team of public health experts to provide direction to us as the situation developed. Today, they announced that university-sponsored events like the ones we host are suspended.

Until further notice, we will not have any tours, information sessions, or open houses. Our staff is available to answer questions. As always, I'll be happy to chat with you in the comments of the blog and on Twitter and Instagram.

The email below is going out to admitted students who registered for our open house events later today. Students who registered for tours and information sessions will get a similar email.

In response to the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, the University has made the decision to cancel University sponsored events indefinitely, including: Days on the Lawn, Admitted Student Tours, Spring Blast, Spring Fling, and EscAPADe. Unfortunately, this means we no longer are able to host you on Grounds for your scheduled admitted student visit.

This decision was made by University leadership after consulting with leading medical experts. It is our hope that these efforts and this decision will best protect the health of our students, staff, faculty, and visitors and assist in slowing the spread of the virus. Our admission deans are available to talk by phone or email if you have questions, and we will be providing updates on social media and on our institutional coronavirus webpage.

We are terribly sorry for the inconvenience as we know you went to great efforts to plan and arrange travel to Charlottesville. We are honored that you are considering the University as a college destination and we are confident you would contribute greatly to our classrooms and community.

Please know discussions have started about alternative ways we can introduce you to our dynamic student experience despite not being able to accommodate visitors. In the meantime, below are links to some resources that we hope will help you get to know our community, our students, and the University Grounds.
Most importantly, stay healthy and take care of yourselves and your families. Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks.

Best wishes,
The Office of Undergraduate Admission

Introducing the #UVA22 Days on the Lawn Student Speakers

I'm thrilled to introduce the students who will be addressing our students at each Days on the Lawn this year. Our welcome address always ends with our student speaker and it's become my favorite part of the morning. I know these students work hard on their speeches and can't wait to share some advice (and maybe a few memories) with our visitors! So you can get to know them in advance, they shared their bios for the blog.

Marlina (Friday, March 30th)
Marlina is an Echols and University Achievement Scholar from Chesapeake, Virginia. She is currently a third-year studying Political Philosophy, Policy and Law in the College of Arts and Sciences. She has served our university community as a Resident Advisor, Chair of Student Council's Community Engagement Committee, Program Director for Madison House Tutoring, and a Sustained Dialogue Moderator. Marlina is also driving the Untold Stories video narratives initiative, a video series featuring unconventional students with unique stories at UVA. Marlina is an active member of University Dance Club, where she continues to pursue her 18-year long passion for the art of dance. Her favorite part about UVA has been the relationships she has formed here. Although the University of Virginia is one of the state's larger public institutions, she has found that once you step foot on Grounds, the university community quickly becomes tight-knit, woven together by a web of friends, mentors, and people who are invested in your success.

Adam (Monday, April 9th)
Adam is a fourth year student, from Cleveland Ohio, studying Economics in the department's Distinguished Majors Program. During his time at UVA, he has focused on expanding the University's social entrepreneurship programming as a student member of the Batten School's Social Entrepreneurship at UVA board. As a Minerva Research Grant recipient, Center for Global Health Scholar, and Entrepreneurship Cup winner, Adam launched his own social enterprise in Rwanda looking at higher education opportunities in the country's refugee camps. Adam is a member of One in Four, an all-male sexual assault prevention group, and an intern for the Virginia Film Festival and the Tom Tom Founder's Festival. Adam's favorite aspect of UVA is the opportunity to fund independent research projects, both at home and abroad, that allow students to explore their passions in real world settings.

Tyler (Friday, April 13th)
Tyler is a fourth-year student from Roanoke, Virginia. He is a student in the College of Arts and Sciences and is part of the Honors Program in the Department of Politics with a minor in History. On Grounds, Tyler is a Co-Chair of the Resident Staff Program, President of the Black Male Initiative, a member of the IMP Society, and a Trustee for the Class of 2018. One of his favorite traditions at UVA is Black Alumni Weekend held which is every other year!

Yaselly (Monday, April 16th)
Yaselly was born to Salvadorian parents and raised in rural Martinsville, Virginia, where the roosters sing at dawn. She was ecstatic to to enter a new adventure at the University of Virginia as a University Achievement Award Scholar. As a mechanical engineering student, she participates in the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, the Intel Stay With it Squad, and the Center for Diversity and Engagement while also conducting research, which lead to her first conference publication this past November. She has also been active throughout her four years at the University in the LatinX community by serving as a member in the Latinx Leadership Council, and as a mentor and executive member for the Peer Mentoring Program for Hispanic and LatinX students. In addition, she has worked under the Office of Dean of Students, participated in Housing and Residence Life as a resident advisor, and has also enjoyed every salsa, bachata, and traditional African dance step she’s learned on the way both on Grounds and abroad.

Maddy (Monday, April 23rd)
Maddy is a fourth-year student from Fresno, California. She's graduating in May with degrees in Art History and Psychology. At UVA, she's involved in Greek life and admissions -- she's a former executive board member of her sorority, is currently on the executive board of Virginia Ambassadors, and is one of the chairs for Days on the Lawn. Her favorite part of UVA is the history and tradition of student self-governance.

Admitted to #UVA21 and Want to Make a Return Visit to UVA?

I got word late yesterday afternoon that all of the upcoming Days on the Lawn dates are full! At this point, we can't encourage any more visitors on DOTL days due to parking availability and the fire codes for the spaces where we hold academic panels (for our students' safety and ours, the Fire Marshall attends to make sure our spaces aren't over capacity). We're excited that we've been able to host so many visitors during our seven open houses.

If you'd like to make a return visit to Grounds and weren't able to attend a Days on the Lawn, you can plan your day on our Visit page. The visit page has information about sitting in on classes, requesting an overnight host, and taking another tour.

The one thing you can't do on a typical visit day is tour our residents halls. For security reasons, non-residents can not have access to a dorm unless they are a guest of a student living in the building. Instead, check out the Housing and Residence Life website. The res life team has gathered images of rooms in every residence hall to give you a sense of the variety of accommodations here. Don't miss the residential colleges that are open to first year students. Brown, Hereford, and the IRC are fantastic options to consider!

Ready to explore!

March Madness in UVA Admission

I'm so thankful the students on our basketball team aren't playing in the ACC tournament until this evening. They've been slated for afternoon games in the past and everyone winds up sneak peeks at the updates between files. We have a tradition of letting my dog "play" with our opponents' mascots before games. Follow me on Instagram if you want to see how things go this year.

March Madness for us is the knowledge that this process wraps up this month! The end of the tunnel is in sight, though it's still weeks away. At this point, there is still a lot to do! We are reading Regular Decision files and rereading the files that were deferred from the Early Action process now that midyear reports have arrived. We've emailed students missing documents twice at this point. In a few cases, we've called counselors to get some extra information or to track down a missing item.

The Days on the Lawn (our admitted student open houses) planning team is also busy preparing for admitted students to arrive on Grounds. We have a few DOTLs in March for Early Action students and many more in April for EA and RD students together. Personalized links to register are emailed to admitted students. Obviously, we aren't done with the RD process yet. We'll send links after decisions are released.

To get you excited, here are some images from past DOTLs...

This next image is from a new tradition. When the previous First Lady suggested that all students celebrate "signing day," something that traditionally was associated with athletics, we created a faux press conference photo booth so students could take pictures of themselves to post on May 1st, the national "signing day."

We'll have the photobooth set up in Peabody Hall again this year. Jack sometimes joins it!

Just collecting those images has me excited. Back to the files...

Notes from the first #UVA20 Days on the Lawn

We interrupt this Regular Decision review process to bring you the first Days on the Lawn for #UVA20! This DOTL was for students admitted during the Early Action process. The day is winding down and families are heading out, so I thought I would share a few photos from the day.

DOTL check-in is at Old Cabell Hall. Most people take one of the shuttle buses from the Emmet & Ivy Garage, which we take over for these days. We have some entertainment in the theater before the official welcome.

After the welcome session, some students head off to sit in on classes and others will go to sessions given by the different schools and colleges at UVA. We also have a resource fair, tours of the grounds, tours of the residence halls, and chances to relax and socialize.

I think it's safe to say that our press conference photo booth was a hit. Since May 1st has been dubbed "College Signing Day," we thought we'd set up a faux press conference so students could take pictures to post on the big day.

Jack even decided to crash (and steal a pom) at one point. Sorry for the photo bomb, Future Hoo.

Only a fraction of the 900+ organizations at UVA can fit in the resource fair, but we had a great variety represented.

How does the Cavalier Marching Band do it? They are always on the road, but they manage to play at DOTL and have a table at the fair. I can't wait to see them on Friday night. (Go Hoos!)

This was Jack's first DOTL and I think he had a fantastic day. Of course, he thought everyone was here to see him and posed for pictures like his brother did before him. He's still learning the ropes, so thanks to those who put up with his puppy energy!

Jack, exhausted, around 4 PM.

Days on the Lawn Update for #UVA20

I wrote a general post about Days on the Lawn earlier in the season, but wanted to add a few notes. As a reminder, here are the DOTL dates for this year:

2016 Days on the Lawn
Monday, March 21
Monday, March 28
Monday, April 4
Friday, April 8
Monday, April 11
Friday, April 15
Monday, April 18

Registration

The two dates set aside completely for admitted Early Action students have been popular. We are no longer taking reservations for the 21st and there may be a little more space available on the 28th. The April dates are open to all admitted students since they obviously come after the April 1st Regular Decision notification date. We have blocked spots for the RD group on those dates and will open them up soon after decisions are released.

There is a waiting list for each date, so if you register for a day and your plans change, please change your reservation right away so someone can come off the waiting list.

Who can join me?

This is addressed on the registration site, but each admitted student can bring two guests. We ask that you not bring the entire family down for DOTL. Space is limited and we want to make sure as many seats as possible are available for admitted students and a parent or two.

What if I can't come to a DOTL?

You can do a lot of the same things on another day, but you'll just have to do a little planning. Our "Plan a Visit" pagehttp://www.virginia.edu/visit/schedule has links to an open class list, the Monroe Society (overnight visit hosts), and other resources for visitors. If you scroll down on the tour page, you'll see that there are department tours offered in addition to the general tour.

Feel free to use the comments to ask questions!

Days on the Lawn: Admitted Student Open Houses for #UVA20

If you've planned a visit to UVA, you know that we have visitor programming every day and allow students to visit class any day of the week. In addition to those daily options, we have several open houses for admitted students each spring.

Students admitted during Early Action will be getting an email shortly about Days on the Lawn, these admitted student open houses (on the UVA Grounds, we just say DOTL).

A photo posted by Dean J|UVa Office of Admission (@uvadeanj) on

DOTL is not required, but it's a chance to experience UVA in a deeper way than you may have if you visited us to attend an information session and take a tour. Admitted students can attend classes, tour residence halls, eat in the dining hall with a current student, and meet with staff members from different offices around the Grounds at a resource fair. There are also sessions about academics, student life, and resources for parents during DOTL (since parents don't go to class with the students).

Admitted students will get an email when registration opens. Keep in mind that a portion of the reservations for the April events will be set aside for RD students. For now, think about which DOTL dates might fit into your schedule if you want to make a return visit to UVA before May 1st. DOTL has always started bright and early at 9 AM, but we are going to offer one program that starts in the afternoon this year.

2016 Days on the Lawn
Monday, March 21
Monday, March 28
Monday, April 4
Friday, April 8
Monday, April 11
Friday, April 15
Monday, April 18 (AM and PM)
One of the things that I love about DOTL is seeing students who "met" each other via the UVA Class of 2020 Facebook page or other social media channels getting to spend time together in person. I feel like our classes show up more connected to each other than ever before because they get to know each other before they step foot on Grounds!

This year will be the first one in 8 years without CavDog at DOTL. He went from being scared of the large crowds as a pup to being so excited by all of the extra attention he got. So, UVA20, a cycle starts anew with you. Your DOTLs will be Jack's first ones and we hope you'll bear with us as he gets used to attending.

Friday Days on the Lawn is FULL! Space available Wednesday and Monday.

We have three more Days on the Lawn events to go! We can't wait to see those of you who have registered to visit on Wednesday, Friday, and next Monday.

The weather forecast seems to be pointing towards us needing to move the welcome sessions indoors for this week, but we'll make the call on each of those a little closer to the start time. As always, there will be signs and volunteers directing you to the proper location.

If you haven't registered yet, there are still spaces available this Wednesday and next Monday. The Friday DOTL is completely full and we can not handle ANY unannounced visitors. This is about fire codes, so we aren't just capping attendance on a whim. For everyone's safety, please pick a different day to visit if you don't have a reservation to attend the Friday DOTL.

By the way, CavDog isn't allowed inside the buildings where we hold our welcome session and panels when it rains. If you want to meet him, come back Peabody Hall after you attend class and he'll be more than happy to spend some time with you! If the weather is nice, you can come see CavDog contort and jump to catch his tennis ball on the lawn in front of Peabody in the afternoon.
